I%26#39;m visiting a friend soon in Charleston, and neither of us have a car. Can anyone recommend a cheap (%26lt;$80) place to stay that%26#39;s near some mode of public transportation or within walking distance to some fun things?
Thanks!!
charleston without a car, need adviceThere arent many hotels on the penninsula in that price range. Sometimes the Riverview Hotel on Lockwood aveneue will have rates around $100.00 All hotels near the market/bars/restaurants are expensive. Where does your friend live? I suggest you look at hotels in Mt. Pleasant or Ripleys point for under $100 and use taxi to take you downtown.
charleston without a car, need adviceIf you are on a budget, you%26#39;d probably be better off to rent a compact car %26amp; stay in Mt. Pleasant. Just the taxi ride from the airport is %26gt;$20. There aren%26#39;t any hotels downtown in that price range or even near it. It%26#39;s sad because Charleston is a great walking town, but there is no public transportation to get you downtown if you stay in the reasonabley priced hotel area.
Good luck!
Thanks for the replies! My friend is in Goose Creek at the navy base, and we%26#39;re not old enough to rent cars. I found a cheap place (Best Value Inn on Dorchester) that looks like it%26#39;s pretty close to the bus lines. I%26#39;m going to check around some more and make sure the stops are within walking distance. I don%26#39;t suppose anyone knows that offhand?
pdiddles -
I wouldn%26#39;t recommend the Best Value Inn. It is
located in a relatively bad area and just looks
very unappeasing (I pass it quite often).
I would look towards the West Ashley area, specifically
along Hwy 17 (Savannah Highway). There are a number
of budget-type hotels there and more dining and
shopping options within walking distance.
There are NO restaurants nearby the Best Value Inn.
Hope this helps.
Alrighty, I%26#39;ve been looking around more, and now I%26#39;m leaning toward the Clarion Hotel Airport. My guy can get the military discount, and that makes it very affordable. It looks like it%26#39;s pretty close to the Northwoods Mall and tons of restaurants, so I think that%26#39;s a much better choice.
Thanks so much for all the replies! It%26#39;s rather difficult to plan a trip to a new city with a limited budget and no car!
The airport hotels, while cheaper, are really far away from the historic district. Most actually lie in the city of North Charleston and some are in areas that aren%26#39;t so good at night. Public transportation in Charleston definitely leaves something to be desired. I don%26#39;t know your situation, but if you are looking for cheap and downtown, you might try the Not-So Hostel (www.notsohostel.com). Downtown, you can walk to pretty much everything and is much nicer than the mall area. If you want to stay near the mall, there is a rather new Holiday Inn Express just off Ashley Phosphate Road that is virtually in the mall parking lot. There will be tons of chain restaurants and a movie theater within walking distance. Good luck.
I think you can find a decent place in a fairly good location for $80 if you book in advance using the best discount sites, like hotwire or roomsavers.com or priceline (if you use priceline, first check out biddingfortravel.com for help/strategy on getting the best deal).
For example, the riverview went for $50/weekdays and $80/wkends these past 2 weeks of april, if you booked in march.
