Relocating from Florida

Mid to late 40%26#39;s couple with 12 year old son moving to SC from Florida. We of course enjoy the beach but have been growing weary of hurricane damage and additional insurance. We would prefer an area featuring good schools and youth athletics particularly baseball. In addition, we would like to enjoy the seasons for a change but prefer a milder climate with a low risk of violent weather. Real estate prices, cost of living and taxes are also important considerations. Would like to be within 45 minutes of an airport. Thanks.

Relocating from Florida

If you%26#39;re going to live in South Carolina, I%26#39;d say move to Columbia. We%26#39;re two hours from the coast and three hours from the mountains. The weather tends to be mild, and the seasons aren%26#39;t as pronounced as I%26#39;d prefer, though we do get spashes of each of them. The most violent weather we have would be thunderstoms during the summer. We have occasional tornadoes, but I%26#39;ve lived in S.C. most of my life and I%26#39;ve never seen one.

Columbia is the state capital as well as home to our largest state university, the University of South Carolina. Because of that, there are lots of cultural activities here. We also have one of the top ten zoos in the country. The schools are pretty good, but it generally depends on what part of town you live in. However, keep in mind that S.C. consistently ranks at the bottom of just about every national category in everything, including education.

I don%26#39;t have any idea where you are on the political spectrum, but if you are very conservative, you might think about the Greenville area. It%26#39;s more up toward the mountains, and they have more seasonal weather (and more snow and less humidity) than we do here in the Midlands.

Cost of living tends to be pretty low in most of S.C. except for maybe Charleston. If you have any other questions, I%26#39;ll be happy to help.

Relocating from Florida

I live in Mt. Pleasant, SC, just outside Charleston. I%26#39;ve been here for 15 years now and absolutely love the place. Like any number of other cities, however, property values have soared in those 15 years. Even so, the quality of life, the people, the climate, and just the atmosphere in general make this a wonderful place to live. I don%26#39;t know where in FL you live, so I don%26#39;t know how much of a shock (if any) the real estate prices will cause you. I would suggest you take time to come to the area and get a ';feel'; for it before relocating. I highly recommend living here, however. It%26#39;s been more home to me than anywhere else I%26#39;ve ever lived.

Have you considered Del Webb%26#39;s Sun City near Hilton Head? Location inland from the ocean but great access and of course more to your age and creature comforts. I would consider this or North of Myrtle Beach on the Intercoastal but to avoid the Hurricanes and New Construction the later is better. I also noticed some nice communities if you get off at the ';Low Country Visitors Center'; and head east looking on the left side of the road! Take care

To bbone: up until a little over a year ago we had lived in Southern California (among other things like good schools, etc.) it was very important to us that we at least have some form of water around us. This is why we ended up in Tega Cay, SC (or you might also check out Fort Mill, SC which is the town we are next to). Tega Cay (www.tegacaysc.org) is perfect for active families. We have walking trails throughout the town, 2 baseball fields, soccer fields, beach club, tennis, golf course, several parks and best of all we are a peninnsula off Lake Wylie (so plenty of fishing and water activities). The school that the children attend are Fort Mill School District which are the best in the state (you might check out their website). There is also another website that if your interested in for more photos (www.tegacaylife.com) it does not look like it has been updated lately but it will give you some idea of what the area looks like. Regarding airports we are apx. 20 mins. from Charlotte (airport). Prices vary in Tega Cay and can range from $100,000 to over $400,000 on the water. As far as realty companies I would say check out Allen Tate (www.allentate.com). If interested and you need anymore info just post a message and I will try to help as best as I can.

I%26#39;m curious about this too. We live in Naples where homes average $400k+, it is very expensve to live here. I%26#39;m curious to know what makes Charleston expensive to live in? Hard to find good paying jobs or hard to find decent priced real estate?

Well what ones finds attractive someone else would have never considered
