Captains Quarters

We are planning a trip to Myrtle Beach in July, 2005. We have 4 kids (15, 12, 11, 8) and are looking very heavily at Captains Quarters. I am finding many mixed reviews and it is making me leary. I would like personal experience with the hotel accomodations as well as the suites (i.e., tight quarters, etc).

Captains Quarters

Wow! 4 kids.. you might want to look into a condo. We were actually thinking of going for July 4th week.. and getting a hotel. Well even the mom and pop hotels want like 150 a night for a basic hotel / motel room. I have not stayed at the CQ, but friends of mine did not come back with very good reviews. Dirty carpet.. overcrowded pool.. kids running around with no adult supervision. But I guess that can happen anywhere though... Good luck!

BTW ~ Unless you like crowds.. you may want to look at a smaller hotel or condo. The condo site we have used in the past is www. elliottrealty.com.

Captains Quarters

the CQ is an older property but I think current management is doing a decent job of maintaining it. The indoor pool complex is pretty extensive %26amp; well kept. A new outdoor pool (lazy river?) will be open by then. Your kids would probably prefer to be a little closer to the heart of town (this hotel is south end) but for the money, it%26#39;s not a bad choice.

The C Q has a not highly advertised building called the North Building that is less expensive than the other main building. It%26#39;s a quaint option that we will definately pursuit next time we go to MB. I think there are suits in that building as well. It%26#39;s between the main CQ (all the rest of sites ammenities are available as well) and the Sea Crest which is my all time favorite place to stay in MB.

keep monitoring www.travelzoo.com, they run some good deals for myrtle. They had a basic room at compass cove for 59 a nigth till end of June, I think that one sold out, they also have a suit at sandcastle south for 79 a night till end of June. Also some of the Hotels run internet specials on there sites which are heavily discounted.

I would heavily suggest you go anywhere BUT Captains Quarters. We stayed last Aug. and it was the most fithly place I have ever been. The carpets were horrible and they even steam cleaned them the first 2 days that we were there. Made no difference!! Try and keep a 3 and 8 year old off of the floor for fear of them turning black with the dirt..

I would not reccomend Captain%26#39;s Quaters. We stayed there for one night last year and hated it. (We had been staying at The Breakers North Tower and wanted to extend out stay by one night but they were booked so we went to CQ.)

1st off, I personally didn%26#39;t care for the lay-out of our room - Enter into bedroom with 2 double beds, next a hall with kitchen to one side, bathroom to the other, then into the living area. The bedroom area is dark unless you want to leave the window curtain open, in which case, all passer-byers can see into bedroom area. Anyway, our room smelled (of garbage) and so did the room of the other family we were traveling with (like urine).

The indoor area reminded me of a prison movie, with catwalks and it smell of car fumes due to the parking arrangement.

The hotel seemed very crowded, especially the pool area, although there are plenty of pools, etc.

The man at the front desk was very friendly and helpful.

Our children are 3, 6, 14, %26amp; 19. Our main concerns are safety. cleanliness and space. My husband and I don%26#39;t want to sleep on a pull-down or pull-out, and neither do we want our youngest children sleeping near access to the balcony -

Of the 1 bedrooms we have stayed in, The Breakers North Tower (Near 27th av) has the best lay-out - Enter into large living area, separate kitchen with washer/dryer, bath off bedroom with 2 double beds. No indoor pools though but has outdoor pool, sm. lazy river and hot tub. Guest are also welcome to use the amenities (loaded) at the Breakers Paradise location, (Near 21st av) 7 blocks down.

We just return from the Roxanne Tower last week - Great, loved it. We had a 2 bedroom/2 bath which was very spacious. No indoor pools, but 2 outdoor pools, lazy river and hot tub. (Near 16th av)

The Carribean is worth considering, reasonable, clean, with a great pool area. The lay out of the room is like that of CQ, but it didn%26#39;t smell and the kids loved the pools. (Near 30th av)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the comments. We ended up not selecting CQ and opted for a condo at Myrtle Beach Resort. We are very excited and wish it were July.

My husband and I stayed at Captain%26#39;s Quarters twice. The first time I was so excited about being in Myrtle Beach for the first time that I didn%26#39;t really pay attention to the room. The cost, pools and bowling alley pretty much had my attention. The second time I was really thrown off. First the room smelled mildewed (the Ocean, I know) but then the carpet was disgustingly dirty, and when I turned over the bed spread and saw blood I was too through. Needless to say I was not happy for the rest of my stay. I just felt like I was sleeping in filth. If your concerned about cleanliness I would try a more upscale hotel.

Hi:

We stayed at the captains quarters in August of 2004. We had the angle ocean front executive suite. The room was newly renovated and we had no complaints. I know that ppl has some issues with the elevators (we were on the 3rd floor so didn%26#39;t use them much) but I understand that they are in the process of being rebuilt.

The 10 or so pools, lazy rivers, hot tubs were always clean.

We have booked to return this August.

Nearby (5 min walk) is the Family Kingdom amusement park which includes water slides.

We have been coming here off and on for 10 years.

John
