Going in June with 3 kids, what to do, fishing/pier...

Hi All...so glad I found this spot. I spent hours trying to be my own travel agent today.

Anyway, about to have a long quiet family weekend. I know about the aquarium thing. I plan to do that and the Fort Sumter (?) package.

However, my husband and oldest son love to fish. Where can they just park themselves on a pier somewhere and fish? I think I keep hearing about some Fort...dunno the name of it (Meyers maybe..?). Sounds like they can go there...the fort with the new bridge that is to be complete in June. I here it is not one of the best places, but if they can fish and the kids can play as well, that would be great.

I know I have given many details, but hardly any information. So, help!!!! What Fort with a nice pier amd I talking about? Next, can they afford to fish from this pier? Is it expensive? We dont want a fishing tour. Just somewhere they can stand and throw in a fishing line. Real basic...and ahhh...cheap stuff, if you will.

Next, we are staying at the Daniel Island. First let me say, I am a college graduate. Still, I have looked at severl maps and I still do not see how to drive from Daniel Island to Charleston. Is there a bridge or something to get from Daniel Island to Charleston? How far is it? Is Daniel Island really as low-key (boring) as I hear it is. If so, trust me, it will be fine with us!!!!Dont laugh at my questions either please!!!

I do think we will do the carriage tour, the aquarium...and since I have heard such good things...also middleton place and Isle of (?)... I saw something somewhere about a swamp with alligators one can walk through. Sounds gory, but my kids will love it! And throw in a trip on a ship museum somewhere. How much do they cost? Can you tell we are on a budget?

Oh and one last thing...I really love the photos of the waterfront that I see. Where is it? How do I get there? What part of Charleston is it in?

Thank all of you so much for assisting me. I am grateful.

Hmmm... I know that Folly Beach has a great pier to fish off of. I think they even rent out fishing poles.

As far as the aquarium.. I personally think its not worth the money. Not when compared to the one at Myrtle Beach. We were very dissapointed. The only thing that was memorable.. was the sea otters.

I would def do the carriage ride and possibly the ghost walk. You will be amazed at how much histiry and interesting things you can learn from these tours.

As far as Daniel Island.. can%26#39;t help ya there... sorry.

Good luck and have fun.

I%26#39;ll be glad to help.

First, if y%26#39;all are NCSU fans, there are lots of farms

not too far from Charleston.

Okay, that was a joke. I%26#39;m an NC fan.

You ask a lot of questions! I%26#39;ll start with Daniel Island. I assume you are staying at the Hampton Inn, which is a fine hotel and right next door to a great restaurant, Queen Anne%26#39;s Revenge. Your kids will LOVE QAR - it is full of pirate memorobalia and the like. The food is great! And it won%26#39;t kill your wallet. There is a (relatively) new interstate going from North Charleston to Mt. Pleasant that travels over Daniel Island. The easiest way to Charleston is through Mt. Pleasant; our new (huge and strikingly beautiful) bridge from Mt. P to Charleston and it is supposed to open in June. Daniel Island was purchased from the Guggenheim Foundation by the City of Charleston and it%26#39;s a %26#39;planned community%26#39;. It%26#39;s a really great place that is growing by leaps and bounds (the Family Circle Cup tennis tournament is held on Daniel Island!). So don%26#39;t worry about Daniel Island - you picked a wonderful place.

If your kids like soccer, DI is the home of the Charleston Battery and probably the nicest soccer-only facility in the USA.

As puppydogeyes said, there is a great fishing pier at Folly Beach(the so-called ';Edge of America';). It%26#39;s the Atlantic ocean so it%26#39;s all salt-water fishing. So that%26#39;s a great place for the kids.

I haven%26#39;t been to the aquarium in Myrtle Beach, but I love this one. I wish my family liked to go more!

If you tell me what kind of food y%26#39;all like, I%26#39;ll be happy to try and steer you that way. We have to eat on a budget too so I can sympathize with you!

We also have a BEAUTIFUL baseball park that is right on the Ashley River for our Charleston Riverdogs. I promise, if your kids like baseball at all, you%26#39;ll love it.

I look forward to helping you (if you want it) ;-)

Dave

Daniel Island is located on I-526 between Mt.Pleasant and North Charleston. It was not developed until several years ago when I-526 was created as a loop around Charleston connecting Highway 17 north of town to Highway 17 south of town. It also, intersects with I-26 in North Charleston. Because it was only accessible a few years ago, most everything on Daniel Island is newly constructed and is now one of the ';hot'; real estate market areas. The closest beach area from there is on Isle of Palms. To get there, go east on 526 toward Mt. Pleasant, then north on Highway 17 to the Isle of Palms connector, turn right and proceed to the beach!

I%26#39;m not sure what Fort you are making reference to, but the only fishing pier on the ocean that I know of is at Folly Beach, which is located across James Island from downtown Charleston. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much. I feel better about where I am going. I like to have a map, a plan for a few places to go and an idea of distance. There is so much in Charleston it is hard to plan online.

And for you Dave, yes, we live near NCSU, and yes, my teen son is enrolled in a science/math program there, but we are UNC FANS in dis house! All others can leave!!!

We are a bit biased. My son%26#39;s father graduated from UNC. ;)

LOL

After I had posted that, I was afraid I would upset you, just in case you did go to MooU.

I%26#39;ts encouraging to know that y%26#39;all have great taste!!

I do hope you have a wonderful time in Charlston.
